CBD oil is becoming increasingly popular as a health supplement, and it’s easy to understand why. CBD is a natural stress-reliever that can help to reduce inflammation and also relieve pain, reduce stress, and offers several other therapeutic benefits.
There are many who believe that CBD can have a beneficial effect on weight loss, although the science behind this is still unclear. What is clear, however, is that a lot of people do believe that it works.
What is CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of many cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis plant. There are more than 100 cannabinoids in total, but only a handful have reached infamy in the world of nutrition. THC is the most well-known, being the psychoactive compound that ‘gets you high’ when you use marijuana. CBD is not psychoactive but it works with and alongside THC to offer many potential benefits.
CBD binds with the endocannabinoid receptors in your body (many are found in the immune system), boosting brain function, reducing pain and reducing inflammation.
How Could CBD Promote Weight Loss?
CBD can help to promote weight loss through a number of mechanisms. Studies suggest that CBD could help to boost your metabolism, while at the same time reducing a person’s appetite. Both of these effects can help to promote weight loss by changing each side of the CICO equation.
At its core, weight loss comes down to the number of calories a person takes in (CI) compared to the amount of energy they burn on a daily basis (Calories Out, or CO). Anything else – satiety, appetite, drugs or medical conditions that alter the speed of a person’s metabolism or change their appetite, and even nutrient timing and macronutrient intake, are all simply modifiers to that equation. Those things can make a difference to how hard it is to balance CICO, but the basic point remains, CICO works.
CBD affects appetite (so it’s easier to eat less) and is thought to boost metabolism (meaning you burn more energy), and are likely to end up in a calorie deficit. CBD also promotes the browning of fat cells. Brown fat is fat that is more likely to be burned to generate heat. It is the ‘good’ kind of fat and it tends to break down more readily than white fat. If more of your fat is brown fat, then it may be broken down more easily when the body needs more energy, so fat loss will come easier.
Could CBD Help You Lose Weight?
Research into the effect of CBD on weight is still very much in its infancy. However, the early evidence suggests that it can indeed help. One challenge that a lot of people face is that CBD oil has a strong taste to it. Many people don’t enjoy using CBD oil sublingually or even baking with it because of the taste. Water soluble CBD is generally well-tolerated, and easier to consume too, making it a good choice for those who would like to try CBD for the first time.
